Thanks to the catwalk show we’ve just witnessed and Margot Tenenbaum’s long-time fan club, chic geek is officially back! We came from granny glam to varsity vibes, but this librarian-esque look’s the easiest to pull off with our help. Find out how we will be transforming into a bunch of chic geeks this season by checking out our guide on nailing the geek-turns-chic trend.

Quirky layering

Green Candy Stripe Cuffed Sleeve Ruffle Skirt Midi Dress

Mixing up vertical and horizontal stripes may seem too cray cray for you; however, there is a trick and that’s picking ones with matching color! A navy stripe on a cute ribbed knitted t-shirt works great with a stunning blue pinafore. This outfit idea creates a retro PE inspired outfit.

Make sure your choice for footwear is keeping up with the trend, too – Chelsea boots, brogues, and flat loafers are all essentials.

The skater dress

Layer a crisp shirt in white underneath your favorite jersey stripe dress to achieve a school uniform vibe. The skater dress can also look greatly layered underneath a denim or checkered shirt or with a roll neck.

Kitsch prints

If you wish to tackle the chic-geek style in the most subtle way, then go for something that has a print that won’t go amiss in the wardrobe of Napoleon Dynamite. Stick with complementary colors for the other separates. Also, now’s a great time for you to dig out those old plimsolls of yours!

The polo neck dress

A polo neck dress is great for dressing up or down and work or play. Ribbed styles that are thicker are perfect for a casual day dressing, especially if you are more of a dress than a pants girl. A vintage denim jacket and a pair of retro trainers can put a spin on things. If you want to look smarter, brogues and tights will give you just that plus a more 60’s feel.

The new pant length can scare you; however, the sooner you adapt to it, the better. The culotte, as well as other trousers with an awkward length,  are definitely here to stay. High waisted styles look much more flattering and you’ll be able to tuck your blouse or top in and give a nod to the 70s flare. If you are not too keen on the idea of rocking high waisted pants, just make sure what you choose fits you perfectly at the waist.

The button-up skirt

Whether it is cord, suede, or denim, or mini or midi, make sure the buttons of your skirt go up all the way. A nerdy tee paired with a jumper tied around your waist or shoulders makes for the ultimate NerdSports outfit. Just make sure it’s in clashing color. The jumper can also work well even if you are actually wearing it, so don’t you worry!

The striped funnel top

If you have to purchase one clothing item this season, then that should be a striped funnel top. It works with trousers, denim, playsuits, and underneath dungarees. The best for this preppy trend and as a transitional layering piece is we wear them with culottes that have subtle prints for a mannish nighttime look.

The mini skirt

The mini skirt was revived during the autumn/winter catwalks, so if you wish to kill two trends using only one look, then select a number that’s in pastel or soft shade. Pair with a printed blouse with a similar tone, then tuck in for a feminine yet formal vibe. You can bring things back to the present using a pointed, lace-up pair of flats. If what you want is to channel a more 1960s vibe, wear a mini skirt with tights. It will keep you warm, which is a bonus!

Think pink

You can wear knits in tackling the trend like an ambassador of Chanel or perhaps Gucci, but make sure they’re tailored, light, and come with lots of pretty detailing. For maximum effect, get a cute woven mini skirt and a top in the same shade of pink or lavender. Make a trio with bejeweled, delicate heels. Of course, it should be pink or lavender.

Co-ord like a pro

A co-ord can be chic and geeky at the same time and the best part of it is everyone can wear it regardless of the size and body shape. A taller girl can sport a high-waisted midi skirt and crop top combo. If you’re on the shorter side, stick to a style that goes below the knee.

Choose a pretty floral design. If possible, stick to a pastel shade mixed with a wintery tone in order to keep the outfit season-friendly. Wear tights as needed. A pleather coat with a round collar in the cream can make your look pretty chic and geeky at the same time.
