What are Frills, ruffles and flounces? To the untrained eye they can look the same and the terminology are sometimes used interchangeably. If you look closer the pattern for a flounce is very different to that of a ruffle. Regardless of how it is called, both ruffles and flounces have a beautiful way of adding additional fullness and volume to a garment, E.g. the ruffles on the edge of a trumpet skirt, or the flounce in a peplum women’s dress.

“Ruffles” and “flounces” are words which are used in different contexts. If we discuss how these words are used in proper English, then they are used differently as compared to using the words in the context of purely fashion, particularly sewing.

Ruffle refers to in sewing, a strip of closely pleated cloth or fabric used for a decoration or trim.
A ruffle refers to the ruff of a bird or It may refer to a fray or ruckus. It also refers to slight disturbance or irregularity on a surface. Ruffle also means vexation or annoyance.

Ruffles may be used as a verb, it refers to disquieting regularity or evenness. To make a ruffle or gather a fabric in a ruffle. To fluster or decompose. It may also mean flipping through pages. It also refers to shuffling something, like cards, or someone’s hair.

When used in the milieu of sewing, it refers to a strip of lace, cloth, or decoration which has been tightly congregated on one end and is sewn to a clothing or quilt for trimming. Ruffles in the fashion world are measured to be wider than flounces. Ruffles are cut in many different ways. Some are cut from circular patterns of fabric while some are cut from rectangular fabric pieces.

In sewing or stitching, it refers to the smaller folds which are made with either fabric, ribbon, or lace and sewn on the ends of skirts or dresses or sometimes on the neck of women’s dresses and women’s tops. They are considered to be more delicate and smaller in size than ruffles and used for decorating a dress or furnishing.

A woman’s dress is more dramatic when a ruffle or flounce is added. It gives an added fun and flow.
